Sylvan Dell has a lot to celebrate this June. We have new authors and illustrators joining our team, our five new t itles are available in eBook format, and June 16th is Marine Mammal Day! One of our new titles, “Astro: The Steller Sea Lion,” is a perfect tie-in to this celebration of marine life. In honor of our new release and Marine Mammal Day. Sylvan Dell’s June featured eBook is “Astro: The Steller Sea Lion.”
“Astro: The Steller Sea Lion,” written by Jeanne Walker Harvey and illustrated by Shennen Bersani, is based on real events, that follow Astro, the Steller sea lion, through some of his travels that take him across the U.S. to his current home at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Astro is only a few days old when found orphaned, he is cared for and raised at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California. When big enough to be released to the wild where he needs to be, he has other plans! Just like a lost dog finding his way home, Astro keeps swimming back towards the Center, crossing miles of open ocean water to do so. After several attempts, people realize that Astro is too accustomed to humans and will just keep coming back. The For Creative Minds educational section includes: Steller Sea Lions, Steller Sea Lions Threatened and Endangered, Where in the World? (A Map Activity), Steller Sea Lion Life Cycle, Sea Lion or Seal? (What’s the Same? What’s Different?). Additional Teaching Activities and Interactive Quizzes are available for free on the Sylvan Dell Publishing website.
Jeanne Walker Harvey, a new additon to the Sylvan Dell team, was fascinated by the story of Astro when she read about it in her local newspaper. She wanted to share the story about Astro and his journey from being a stranded baby to a rehabilitated full grown Steller Sea Lion. She also wanted to write a story that conveys the love and care given by the numerous dedicated volunteers at the Marine Mammal Center (the “Center”) to wounded, sick and stranded animals, and those caring for Astro at his new home at the Mystic Aquarium. Jeanne’s goal was to educate people about the negative effects humans can have on marine mammals by explaining the types of injuries these animals suffer.
Shennen Bersani, award-winning children’s book illustrator, has two million copies of her illustrated books cherished and read by families throughout the world. She has been a freelance illustrator since 1989. She works primarily with colored pencils, sometimes using a mixed-media technique of colored pencils, crayons, and paint. Her art delivers a unique blend of realism, heartfelt emotion, and life lessons for children of all ages. Shennen’s long-time love of sea lions and their protection influenced this emotional and realistic portrayal of a sea lion hero: Astro, the Steller Sea Lion.
